What is the Impression Yoke?

The Impression Yoke is a top-down yoke construction created by Eva Mili in 2025 for her Knit Impression system. It is built around the Impression Shoulder – a saddle-inspired shoulder shape that is worked continuously, without breaking the yarn.
Unlike a fixed-size yoke construction, the Impression Yoke is generated individually by the Knit Impression engine. The shoulder shaping, armhole depth, front and back armhole shaping and sleeve cap are calculated from the knitter’s gauge and the fit data used for that specific design.
The idea behind this construction is to bring together three things that are not always easy to combine: the anatomical strength of a traditional saddle shoulder, a continuous top-down workflow for both pullovers and cardigans, and a custom fit that can adapt to different bodies and different yarn gauges.
The traditional saddle shoulder
A traditional saddle shoulder is a classic sweater construction where the shoulder sections are usually worked as separate pieces or clearly separate structural elements.
From a construction point of view, this type of shoulder can work very well. The shoulder strap sits across the top of the shoulder and can follow the natural shape of the human body quite closely. It gives the garment a defined shoulder line and helps create a stable, anatomical fit.
The limitation is that this construction is not worked as one continuous top-down flow. It requires separate steps, joins, or a more piece-by-piece approach.
The contiguous saddle-inspired shoulder
A contiguous saddle-inspired shoulder takes a different approach. The whole yoke is worked continuously from the top down, usually without breaking the yarn. The saddle-like shape is created through increases while the yoke grows.
This makes the knitting process very smooth. The garment develops from the neckline downward in one continuous piece, which is one of the reasons contiguous constructions are so appealing.
However, the shoulder shape is different from a traditional saddle shoulder. In many contiguous saddle-inspired constructions, the saddle shape is created mainly through increases, so the shoulder line can become softer and more sloped. This can be beautiful, but it does not always give the same anatomical structure as a classic saddle shoulder. The shoulder may look less defined, and the fit can behave differently on the body.
This is where the Impression Shoulder takes a different path.
The Impression Shoulder
The Impression Shoulder takes the continuous top-down idea further, but changes how the shoulder itself is built.
Like a contiguous saddle-inspired shoulder, it is worked without breaking the yarn. The yoke grows from the neckline downward in one continuous piece, either in the round for a pullover or back and forth for a cardigan.
In the Impression Shoulder, the shoulder is not shaped by simply passing across it in a round. Instead, the work turns back and forth around the shoulder band, building the shoulder before the rest of the yoke continues.

In a pullover, this happens through short rows within the top-down construction. In a cardigan, the same idea is worked back and forth as part of the open yoke.
These repeated shoulder shaping passes create a more defined, three-dimensional shoulder band.
This brings the Impression Shoulder closer to the construction logic of a traditional saddle shoulder: the shoulder band has its own shape, width, and direction. But unlike a traditional saddle shoulder, it is not worked as a separate piece. It remains fully integrated into the continuous top-down yoke.
The result is a continuous yoke that behaves more like a traditional saddle shoulder in the shoulder area: more defined, more anatomical, and better able to follow the natural line across the top of the body.

Designed for custom measurements and custom gauge
The Impression Yoke is not based on one fixed set of stitch counts or one fixed gauge. Instead, it is calculated for each individual garment.
The Knit Impression engine uses the knitter’s gauge and the fit data required for that specific design to generate a custom-fit pattern. This means the same construction can be adapted to different sizes, proportions, yarn weights, and knitting gauges.

The goal is not only to scale the sweater up or down, but to preserve the construction logic of the yoke: the shoulder width, the armhole depth, the sleeve cap shape, and the set-in sleeve structure all need to work together for the individual body.
The Impression Shoulder and the Knit Impression engine
The Impression Shoulder is the central feature of the Impression Yoke. It is a saddle-inspired shoulder band that is shaped directly inside the continuous top-down yoke.
In a fixed pattern, this kind of shoulder would usually be written for one specific gauge and one specific size range. In the Knit Impression system, the shoulder is calculated automatically. The engine determines how many stitches are needed for the shoulder band, how the shoulder shaping should develop, and how it should connect to the rest of the yoke.

This allows the Impression Shoulder to keep its structure across different gauges and body measurements, instead of becoming too narrow, too wide, too shallow, or too soft when the gauge changes.
Set-in-style sleeves
The Impression Yoke is designed with set-in-style sleeves. Although the sweater is worked top down as one continuous construction, the sleeve area is shaped to preserve the look and function of a set-in sleeve.
The sleeve cap is calculated as part of the yoke. The Knit Impression engine adjusts the sleeve shaping to the individual gauge and body measurements, so the sleeve can keep a set-in-style form even when the stitch count, row gauge, upper arm circumference, or armhole depth changes.

This is one of the key goals of the Impression Yoke: to keep the clean structure of a set-in sleeve while still allowing the sweater to be generated as a custom-fit, continuous top-down pattern.
What makes it different?
The Impression Yoke combines four important ideas:
A continuous top-down workflow
The yoke is worked without breaking the yarn. The shoulder shaping is built directly into the knitting process, so the garment grows smoothly from the neckline downward, whether it is worked in the round or back and forth.
A more defined shoulder band
Unlike many contiguous saddle-inspired shoulders, the Impression Shoulder creates a more visible and structured shoulder section. The shoulder band is not just suggested by increases – it is shaped as its own three-dimensional area.
A set-in-style sleeve shape
The sleeve area is calculated to preserve a set-in-style sleeve cap. This helps the sleeve grow from the yoke in a more structured way, rather than simply expanding with the rest of the yoke.
A custom-fit calculation
The construction is generated by the Knit Impression engine from the knitter’s own measurements and gauge. The shoulder, yoke, armhole, and sleeve shaping are adjusted together, so the construction can adapt to the individual body and yarn.
